You can choose to start from a command line to configure your system and install applications using emerge (a package manager) or you can choose to use a live cd to install an automatically generated system on your pc using the graphical installer. If you choose to install all by yourself, perfomances are great because everything is configured just as you want. Everything is configured and optimized for your processor, it means = better performance. Although the package manager is very slow ( it's quite normal, it compiles sources) the system goes great. Have to give a try.

6 Miro it's a very good video-feed aggregator (podcast)(i don't like the word "pod") but i think that's a little unstable due to his load on the system. Miro is doing well on newer systems but on older systems it may crash or freeze.

10 I like the interface and how the system works in general (i like plugins a lot) but i think that there is a lot to do to make pidgin a very good im program. For example, msn protocol supported by pidgin needs to be updated..a lot of features are missing and other programs like emesene or Amsn are using newer versions of the protocol. The gui and the interaction system needs to be improved to make its use simpler. However, pidgin is a good choice. ;)
